If it were up to just the players, Max Scherzer will be taking home his fourth Cy Young award in a few weeks. Scherzer won his third Players Choice Award for NL Outstanding Pitcher last week.
Scherzer finished his 2021 campaign with a 2.46 ERA and 236 strikeouts in 179.1 IP. He led all pitchers in WHIP with a 0.864 mark.
Scherzer noted how much winning another Players Choice Award means to him in a video released by the MLBPA.
“To be selected by the players as the best pitcher – you face these guys, that just shows you they have a level of respect for you. They recognize you as the best. So that really does mean a lot to me, to be recognized by my peers.”
After being traded to the Dodgers, Scherzer posted an insane 0.78 ERA in his first nine starts. He was also the one to close out the rival Giants in Game 5 of the NLDS. The Dodgers and Scherzer paid a steep price for the moment, but hey, what a moment.

Former teammate Bryce Harper called Scherzer “one of the best to ever do it”. Ryan Zimmerman, another veteran Nationals player, also heaped praise on Scherzer. Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani stated that he “learned a lot from him as a pitcher”.
Mad Max has a compelling case for another Cy Young award. Current teammates Julio Urias and Walker Buehler should also receive votes.
The Cy Young results are set to be announced on Wednesday, November 17th on MLB Network.
