5 strikeouts in longest outing of the season for the Dodgers’ 2020 second-round pick

Yoshi Tsutsugo stayed hot for Oklahoma City, Low-A Rancho Cucamonga rallied to finish a 10-2 road trip on a high note, and a 2020 draft pick by the Dodgers highlighted Sunday’s minor league action.

Player of the day

Clayton Beeter had his best start of the season for High-A Great Lakes, striking out five in three scoreless innings, allowing only only a single that was erased by a double play.

Three innings is the longest Beeter has pitched in a game this season, usually pitching every four or five days or so. The 2020 second-rounder has allowed only two earned runs in six games against West Michigan this year, with 16 strikeouts against only eight baserunners allowed in nine innings.

On the season, Beeter has a 3.72 ERA and 3.31 FIP in 29 innings, with 41 strikeouts and 13 walks. His 35.3-percent strikeout rate outpaces the 26.1-percent league-wide rate in High-A Central.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City hit six doubles in cruising to a win over the Round Rock Express (Rangers). Yoshi Tsutsugo hit two of those doubles and also walked twice, scoring three times and driving in one. Tsutsugo doubled and drove in a run in each of the last three games, and in his last 17 games is hitting .377/.500/.755 with 10 extra-base hits, 13 walks, and only six strikeouts.

Steven Souza Jr. also doubled twice on Sunday. Second baseman Carlos Asuaje tripled home two, third baseman Cristian Santana doubled, singled, and drove in two, and centerfielder Drew Avans singled twice and stole two bases.

Double-A Tulsa

Six early runs — three each against Gus Varland and Andrew Schwaab — was enough to sink Tulsa against the Midland RockHounds (A‘s). Miguel Vargas and James Outman each had a double and single, and Devin Mann also had two hits.

Tulsa also wore this uniforms that have some 1980s Padres and Astros vibes to them:

High-A Great Lakes

Alec Gamboa followed Beeter with four strong innings of his own, and Great Lakes rallied to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers). Gamboa allowed a solo home run and struck out four.

Three runs in the fifth broke the tie, with Brandon Lewis hitting a sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring wild pitch, then catcher Carson Taylor singled home Ryan Ward, who homered earlier.

Shortstop Leonel Valera also homered for the Loons.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga

Second baseman Sam McWilliams hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, turning around a one-run deficit in a win over the Modesto Nuts (Mariners) to finish a 10-2 road trip for Rancho Cucamonga. McWilliams also singled in the sixth and tripled in the fifth, one of three triples in the game for the Quakes.

Transactions

Triple-A: Yefry Ramírez was called up to the Dodgers. Mitch White and Zach McKinstry were optioned to Oklahoma City.

Sunday scores

Oklahoma City 7, Round Rock 1

Midland 6, Tulsa 4

Great Lakes 5, West Michigan Whitecaps 1

Rancho Cucamonga 8, Modesto 4

Monday schedule

5:05 p.m. PT: Oklahoma City (Ryan Pepiot) at Round Rock (Brock Burke)

This is the Triple-A debut for the 23-year-old Pepiot, who was promoted on Saturday after he posted a 2.87 ERA and 34.8-percent strikeout rate with Double-A Tulsa.
